We hear about it all the time. A professional athlete taking up MMA training to excel their endurance, flexibility, strength and here is another fantastic story. The latest NFL player that credits MMA training for helping him into the NFL is Jorvorskie Lane. However, Lane wasn’t one of those guys that ran for a 1,000 yards last year and wants to get better. He wasn’t even drafter and was looking to just make it on the roster of an NFL team.

Since Ronda Rousey burst on the the MMA scene and won the Strikeforce Women’s Championship Belt judo has taken a turn for the better. There have been several popular mixed martial artists who have trained Judo before and taken into the cage, but none so dominant as Rousey. She is an Olympic medalist in the sport and has defeated every opponent quite handily using her superior Judo skills to toss each female to the ground and submit them via arm bar.

The world of Mixed Martial Arts has grown rapidly since we first saw the UFC emerge on to the scene back in the early 90′s. on “Bones” Jones, the current UFC light-heavyweight champion has said in interviews he considers UFC middleweight champion his idol, but has also said he would like to fight him one day. Looking at Jones’ performances so far in the UFC, he appears to be a younger, taller version of Silva. Former heavyweight champion of the world, Frank Mir has always been known for his killer instinct, especially in regards to the submission finish. He left Pete Williams grimacing in pain after falling into a dangerously tight shoulder lock, nearly took Roberto Traven’s arm home and forced the notoriously tough David “Tank” Abbott to tap the canvas in under 50 seconds. While these victories are memorable, Mir continues to outdo himself.

The Best Heavyweights Outside of the UFC
UFC parent company, Zuffa has done a wonderful job of acquiring not only talented fighters, but struggling promotions as well. As a result, the majority of bona fide talents now hold places amongst UFC and Strikeforce ranks. Just the same, there are a few extremely promising heavyweights competing outside of the prestigious UFC organization, and it’s time to recognize these men and acknowledge the fact they not only deserve a shot on the big stage, but could very well find themselves under contract with the UFC sooner rather than later.
