As a Mixed Martial Artist your body is like a machine. When you place the proper fuel in it and train the level that you can achieve becomes infinite. If you choose to indulge in fast foods, soda, and beer then you won’t see that top level performance in your training and in your fights. Any serious fighter who wants to make a name for him or herself understands the fine balance between proper nutrition and solid training. You can’t have one without the other and that is something a lot of up and comers need to learn if they want to make it to the top.

Nutrition for MMA is similar to good nutrition for your daily life, with a few exceptions. If you are serious about becoming a talented Mixed Martial Artist then you need to examine these tips and find ways to add them into your life.

Mixed Martial Artists Must Stay Hydrated

If you are going to train on a regular basis then you must keep yourself hydrated. This doesn’t mean that you can go all day without drinking much and then binge prior to class. You need to drink regular amounts of water through out the day so that when you make it to class you won’t find yourself dehydrated. The average Mixed Martial Artist needs to drink 10-12 eight ounce glasses of water each day. The water helps flush your system of toxins and keep everything running smoothly.

Don’t think that you are drinking enough if your daily intake consists mostly soda, juice, and beer. Soda contains caffeine and when you drink it it will draw the water out of your body leading you down the path of dehydration. Juice is packed with sugar so it will mess with your insulin/ blood sugar levels. Plus those calories will just turn into fat. Alcohol is packed with unnecessary calories. They don’t call it a beer belly for nothing.

Food for Fighters

Mixed Martial Artists need to consume adequate amounts of protein in their diet. Training at such a high level means your muscles will need to be regenerated and the only way to do so is with protein. Good sources include lean meats, whey powder, low milk and yogurt, or protein bars.

Along with protein a fighter should consume foods that will b e you energy but not load you down with sugar. A diet plan for Mixed Martial Artists isn’t a difficult thing to come up with or follow. It is similar to what you should be doing on a regular basis, with the exception of additional protein. If you develop a routine and stick to it then you will see leaps and bounds in your MMA performance that exercise alone would not get you.
