About the Authors
This dummies written by MMA veteran Frank Shamrock and Mary Van Note (contributor) is the most comprehensive book on mixed martial arts there is on the market. Most of you may already know Frank Shamrock since he is the brother of the famous UFC fighter Ken Shamrock. He is also widely known for coaching teams in the now defunct International Fight League. The contributor to this book is Mary Van Note and she bring humor to this book and does it very well! So, if you are a beginner to the world of MMA or even been into it for a year or two then this book could possibly fill you in on all you need to know to truly enjoy the sport.
What This Book Covers
When a lot of beginners watch a UFC fight and hear Joe Rogan talk they have tons of questions like:
- What is the ground game?
- What is a kimur?
- What does he mean by leg lock?
- How do the points work in judging?
If you find yourself asking the questions like above then this might be just the perfect book for you. However, if you know the basics of MMA and the history then I would personally recommend a book like The MMA Encyclopedia.
Topics & Depth Of This Book
This book for dummies isn’t just about Jiu Jitsu, Judo, or wrestling but a larger variety of styles within Mixed Martial Arts which makes it very interesting. It does an excellent job of taking you for the very beginning to actually walking into the cage, so if that is your thing then this would be a great book for you. Frank and Mary take you into the 8 positions of power and giving you the submission hold for each position allowing you to get an inside glimpse into these techniques. It takes you from beginning MMA all the way to being inside the cage, if that’s your thing.
Important: What This Book Won’t Teach You..
This book is not about deep technical details and MMA training. If you are looking for a book that will explain how to do an arm lock then this book isn’t for you. Also, if you are looking for a book that will give you details and ideas on how to train for MMA then this book isn’t for you. However, if you are looking for a book to learn about the world of MMA then this book is perfect for you.
My Rating Of MMA For Dummies
I think this book is a 4.5 for some people and a 3 for others. What I mean by that is if you are true beginner to MMA then it is a great book for you. However, if you are looking for techniques and training advise then there are certainly better books out there for you (see our Top Books For MMA).
