This book written by Rory Miller titled, “Self Defense: Facing Violence: Preparing for the Unexpected” is a good introduction to self defense with a few pitfalls. One important aspect you should know right off the bat is that this book doesn’t go into a lot of detail about techniques and movement. However, it dives into the psychological turmoil and dynamics caused by violent encounters.

This dummies written by MMA veteran Frank Shamrock and Mary Van Note (contributor) is the most comprehensive book on mixed martial arts there is on the market. Most of you may already know Frank Shamrock since he is the brother of the famous UFC fighter Ken Shamrock. He is also widely known for coaching teams in the now defunct International Fight League. The contributor to this book is Mary Van Note and she bring humor to this book and does it very well! Since Ronda Rousey burst on the the MMA scene and won the Strikeforce Women’s Championship Belt judo has taken a turn for the better. There have been several popular mixed martial artists who have trained Judo before and taken into the cage, but none so dominant as Rousey. She is an Olympic medalist in the sport and has defeated every opponent quite handily using her superior Judo skills to toss each female to the ground and submit them via arm bar.

When you walk into a boxing or MMA training gym for the first time it can be intimidating. There is a constant cracking of leather on leather as pads are pounded and bags are caved in under relentless punching. Everywhere you look there are guys, and girls, with blank expressions on their faces except for the embers in their eyes as they go about their daily routines. They move like the big hunting cats of Africa, effortlessly yet poised to strike at any moment. They posses speed, they posses power. And guess what, so will you one day.

The only way to become a skilled martial artist and skilled at mma training is by finding an MMA gym or dojo with qualified instructors. In the age of the Internet people are able to post videos, blogs, and various tutorials for others to use; however despite the popular belief you will not be a skilled fighter if you do not train to fight with live opponents and teachers.
